Cappuccino: a beverage with tradition and passion
Cappuccino, the cult drink from Italy, delights coffee lovers around the world. But did you know that its roots are in Austria? Originally known as “Kapuziner,” this beverage was further developed in Italy during World War I. Today, the cappuccino combines espresso and creamy milk foam into an unparalleled treat. Here we show you how to make the perfect cappuccino.
What is a cappuccino?
A cappuccino traditionally consists of two main ingredients:
- Espresso - An intense shot of 25-30 ml. The bean blend often consists of 70% Arabica and 30% Robusta.
- Creamy milk foam - About 60-70 ml of finely frothed milk, ideally organic whole milk.
The combination of these two ingredients results in a harmonious drink that impresses with its velvety texture and aromatic taste.
The perfect preparation of a cappuccino in 4 steps
1. preheating the cup
The cappuccino cup (approx. 150 ml) should be warmed up with hot water. A cold cup lets the espresso cool down quickly, which can have a negative effect on the taste.
2. prepare the espresso
For the best taste, we recommend using freshly ground beans. A dark roast brings out the flavor particularly well.
- Grinding degree: medium
- Amount of coffee: 7-9 g per cup
- Result: 25-30 ml of espresso
3.Frothing milk - this is how it works
The technique:
- Pour about 90 ml of cold milk into a metal frothing jug.
- Hold the steam nozzle just below the surface of the milk and open it completely. Suck air into the milk until it becomes slightly warm (about 30°C).
- Lower the nozzle so that the milk “rolls” until the temperature reaches about 64°C.
Tip: If the milk jug gets too hot in your hand, the milk is at the perfect temperature. Then swirl the milk in a circular motion to make it shiny and creamy.
4. pour the milk
Pour the frothed milk into the espresso. The milk should flow gently into the cup to preserve the crema of the espresso. With a little practice, you can even make latte art, such as a heart or a tulip.
Tips & tricks for the perfect cappuccino
- Coffee quality counts: Use high-quality freshly roasted beans.
- Milk alternative: Plant-based options such as soy or almond milk can also produce a fine foam.
- Practice makes perfect: latte art requires patience and a steady hand.
Frequently asked questions about preparing cappuccino
1.Which milk is best for cappuccino?
Organic whole milk gives the creamiest foam. For a vegan alternative, soy or almond milk is ideal.
2. what is the difference between latte macchiato and cappuccino?
Latte macchiato contains more milk and the espresso is poured over the milk. With a cappuccino, on the other hand, the milk is poured into the espresso.
3.Which bean blend is ideal?
Traditionally 70% Arabica and 30% Robusta. If you like it fruitier, you can choose single-origin Arabica.
4.Can cappuccino be prepared with a fully automatic coffee machine?
Yes, but the temperature of the milk foam is more difficult to control. Optimize the amount of coffee, frothing time and strength.
5.How important is the grind of the coffee?
A medium to fine grind ensures the best extraction and perfect taste.
6 Why should the cup be preheated?
A cold cup can cause the espresso to cool too quickly, losing flavor.
In conclusion: perfection through practice
A cappuccino is more than a drink - it is an experience. With the right ingredients, a little patience and attention to detail, you can bring the taste of Italy straight to your kitchen. Try it out and become a barista within your own four walls!
