The company, founded in Leipzig in 1854 and now based in Dortmund, is one of the pioneers of fair trade and sustainable coffee growing. The first agreement was signed with TransFair more than 20 years ago. This was followed by UTZ certification, proof of organic competence and the cooperation agreement with the Rainforest Alliance.

The large company is less in the public eye, however, as the vast majority of the 27,000 tonnes of green coffee produced annually is roasted for private labels. The private labels are characterised by a special selection of top coffee from the best growing regions.

The coffee beans are carefully and long-roasted according to the Schirmer 1854 recipe to develop their full flavour, as is usual for Italian roasts. The result is intensely aromatic and full-bodied coffee beans that fill the air with a delicious coffee aroma as soon as they are ground.

Combined with a suitable fully automatic coffee machine, this produces a Schirmer espresso with the finest crema, which is stable. Particularly noteworthy is the high yield, which makes for good profits in the hospitality industry. However, the intensity of flavour is influenced by the coffee machine used, its cleanliness and the quality of the coffee water.
